Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), the most recent version of Internet Protocols (IPs), was developed in response to IPv4 address exhaustion. With the intention of replacing IPv4, IPv6 uses a 128-bit address and allowing much more addresses than what is currently available with IPv4.

Although the two were not designed to be interoperable, several transition mechanisms have been devised to allow communication between IPv4 and IPv6 hosts.
